Parachute Band – Technicolor

Posted in abundantlife, audible, recommended by E on April 28, 2009

The Parachute Band. Worship music from New Zealand. One of the more interesting and musically diverse worship bands. Most of their songs are hard to play so you don’t hear many of them making their way into local church services, but that sophisticated sound is just what makes them appealing. A bit more than the standard soft-rock-worship fare, they delve into a wider array of musical flavors.

“TECHNICOLOR, the Parachute Band’s latest release, sees a band that has found their voice. With eleven tracks of sonically colourful worship songs, TECHNICOLOR is based around the concept that God’s living water equals life in all its colour… full blazing colour.”

Susan Boyle on Britian’s Got Talent

People can be so shallow. Look how the judges are ashamed after they realize they had been judging her on her appearance even before she started to sing. This is an inspiring and also humbling video.

Fifty People One Question

Interesting video. People’s personalities are so different, it’s very neat to see the different responses they give to the same question.

Jericho by Weekend Players

Been really liking this song since I found it yesterday on Pandora.

I hear your voice calling out to reach me,
Then all is calm and clear.
I feel no pain when you hold me,
Pull me in and draw me near.
I see your eyes of hazy blue
But oh so clear, sincere and true
I taste the air around you
And I feel brand new, new, new, new

Come fill my senses up with you
You’ve turned the jaded into new
Come fill my senses up with you
Love would be senseless without you
Come fill my senses up with you
You, you, you, you, you, you

There was a time when love was blind
Love lost and all at sea
Love came in dreams and waves
Came and went away from me
All forsaken
All forlorn
All mistaken
Feel no scorn
And then you pulled me from the darkness
And I see things new, new, new, new

Come fill my senses up with you
You’ve turned the jaded into new
Come fill my senses up with you
Love would be senseless without you
Come fill my senses up with you
You, you, you, you, you, you

Come fill my senses up with you
You, you, you, you, you, you

A Traveler’s Dream

Posted in recommended, roam by E on January 31, 2009

I am so happy with this travel site that I decided it deserved a blog post.
As someone who has spent many hours searching for airfare, I can tell you that Kayak.com is hands down the best place to search for an airline ticket. People ask me for travel advice, and I used to tell them, “Don’t go to just one site. The key is to check all your options – you have to check everywhere to find the best deal.” Now I simply say, “Easy. Go to Kayak.com.”

The nice thing about Kayak is that it shows you information that is beyond the details for the exact dates you selected. It helps you see your options and you don’t feel like you need to search a hundred times to find something you might have missed.

Here are two great things about Kayak:

Ticket price charts
On what day will you find the best deal?

Have the prices been steady or jumping around?

Daily Buzz
An email tracking system that sends you the daily prices.

Kayak doesn’t search every airline so you might still want to do some more shopping around if you’re going to a destination that isn’t well serviced by the carriers they list. But for most destinations, this is a one stop shop.

Lincoln, King, Obama

Posted in extraextrareadallaboutit, people, thoughts by E on January 19, 2009

Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, is from
Illinois, the same state as
Abraham Lincoln, who fought to end slavery, will be sworn in the day after the national holiday honoring
Martin Luther King, who gave his life for the civil rights of African-Americans.

En route to the nation’ capital,
Obama retraced part of
Lincoln’s journey to Washington, ending with a concert at the
Lincoln Memorialwhich is also the site of
Dr. King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

I have to say that fits together pretty nicely.

We live in historic times.

Martin Luther King Day

Posted in abundantlife, people, thoughts by E on January 19, 2009

Yesterday my church had the privilege of hosting a question and answer session with a woman in our church named Betty Nix, who worked with Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement. It was fascinating to get a glimpse of what life was like for African Americans just a handful of decades ago, and what the civil rights movement was like from someone who was an active participant.

She spoke about King’s commitment to non-violent protest, and how they were trained that it was a crucial aspect of the movement. “If you signed up to be involved, you knew that meant you would have to just stand and take the abuse when it came,” she said.

She talked about how much King’s movement was based on spiritual foundations (a point that seems to be forgotten by many) and how each meeting was started with a prayer.

She said she used to hide in the woods on her way home from meetings as the Klu Klux Klan was passing by, waiting in the dark until they were gone and she could return to her home and her children.

She told a story about being pulled over in her car for no reason, and being harassed by the sheriff who showed up at her home several times and finally took her driver’s license away with no explanation. There was nothing wrong with the license, but she had to go to court to have the it returned and was banned from driving for 30 days.

My generation and younger would be wise to never forget how close we have lived to such injustices and to stand with people who still suffer injustice in our times. We should follow Dr. King’s example of fighting for justice on a foundation of spiritual strength and inspiration. Justice doesn’t mean fighting for the right of everyone to have their way or do whatever they want. It means getting past our preconceived ideas and recognizing what really is true and just, and standing up for that truth.
